Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. She then worked as the hat checker in the nightclub before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
